CrimeMapper 2

Welcome to CrimeMapper
CrimeMapper has recently been enhanced with the following new features and services:

1. Nineteen new crime categories have been added.  The new crimes (referred to as Part II crimes) include: Simple Assault, Forgery, Fraud, Embezzlement, Stolen Property, Vandalism, Weapon Laws, Prostitution, Sex Crimes, Drug Laws, Gambling, Family Offenses, D.U.I.I., Liquor Laws, Disorderly Conduct, Kidnapping, Curfew, Runaway, and Trespass/Threats/etc.  (Note: The Trespass/Threats/etc. category includes: Trespass, Blackmail, Extortion, Bomb Threats, Stalking, Threats/Intimidation - including phone threats, Shooting in Prohibited Areas, Animal Ordinances and Unspecified Offenses.)

The new Part II crimes are in addition to the eight, Part I crimes that CrimeMapper has mapped since its launch in February 2001.  The Part I crimes include: Assault, Arson, Burglary, Larceny, Vehicle Theft, Robbery, Rape, and Homicide.

2. Theft from Auto (car-prowl) has been broken out of the Larceny category.  Theft from Auto can now be mapped as a separate offense to more easily identify where these crimes occur.  (Note: Although Theft from Auto has been separated from the Larceny category, it remains a Larceny.)  The updated Larceny category now includes: pickpocket, pursesnatch, shoplift, and bike theft.

3. A new e-mail notification feature has been added.  Users can select a new e-mail notification option that will automatically send a monthly e-mail containing a summary of crimes that have occurred around a specific address or location within the City of Portland.  CrimeMapper e-mail notifications can be an easy and convenient way to track crimes that have occurred around a home or business.  Notifications are sent monthly, soon after the CrimeMapper database has been updated.  Subscribers can update their e-mail address, choose a different location, select different crimes, or stop receiving notifications at any time.

CrimeMapper notifications require a Portland Online account.  Setting up an account is fast, easy and secure.  Click here to get started.

If you already have a Portland Online account and would like to start receiving monthly e-mail notifications, click here to go to the CrimeMapper E-mail Notification Page .

4. While we’ve enhanced CrimeMapper and added new features, ease of use has remained a top priority.  CrimeMapper remains easy to use because changes to the interface have been kept to a minimum.

CrimeMapper Basics
CrimeMapper is an easy to use web-based Geographic Information System that simplifies the mapping and tracking of crimes reported to the Portland Police Bureau.  CrimeMapper is a service of the City of Portland - a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Technology Services and the Portland Police Bureau.

The CrimeMapper database contains a full year of data, and is updated monthly using data supplied from the Portland Police Data System (PPDS).  When a new month of data is added, the oldest month of data is removed.  This updating technique gives users access to the most recent 12-months of data available.  Database updates typically occur on the 15th of the month.

Users can search CrimeMapper by using a street address or intersection, or pan and zoom a map of the City of Portland.

Users can choose from 28 crime categories, and graph and compare each crime by month, day of week or time of day.

CrimeMapper also uses a quarter-mile grid to summarize crime.  Since multiple crimes can be reported at the same location, occurrence points may overlap and display an incomplete picture of the total number of crimes reported at that location.  Each quarter-mile grid is shaded to display the frequency of crime within the grid - as the number of crimes increases within a grid, the color of the grid changes.

Crime Mapping Goals
The goal of neighborhood crime mapping is to reduce crime and the fear of crime, and improve livability in Portland 's neighborhoods.

CrimeMapper supports that goal in four ways:
  • Provides information about reported crime to the public so people have a more comprehensive view of what is occurring in their neighborhood.
  • Encourages involvement in problem solving efforts through links to service providers.
  • Provides a tool for public safety partners to evaluate their efforts to see if their activities are having an effect on reported crime in their neighborhood or business district.
  • Demonstrates partnerships with the Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI), Neighborhood Block Watch organizers and other municipalities and jurisdictions.
By providing on-line tools that help citizens identify and track neighborhood crime, the community and the police can work together to develop effective crime prevention and problem solving strategies. These strategies can be targeted on problems before they develop into more serious situations that require additional police resources or that negatively influence livability in Portland's neighborhoods.
